Riohacha is a city in the La Guajira region, in the northeast of Colombia, and its gastronomy reflects a blend of indigenous, African, and Spanish influences. Here is a description of some of the typical dishes you can find in this region:

Arepas de Yuca

Yuca arepas are a staple food in La Guajira. Unlike traditional arepas made from corn, yuca arepas are prepared from this tuberous root. They are typically filled with cheese or meat and can be baked or grilled. They have a soft texture and a slightly sweet flavor.

Arroz con Coco

This is a very popular dish in the coastal region. Arroz con coco is cooked with coconut milk, giving it a creamy and sweet flavor. It is often served with fish or seafood and is ideal for accompanying fresh and light meals.

Fried Mojarra

Fried mojarra is a typical fish from the coastal region of La Guajira. It is seasoned with salt and spices, then fried until it is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It is commonly served with arroz con coco, patacones (fried plantains), and salad.

Seafood Casserole

This dish is a stew made with various types of seafood, such as shrimp, squid, and mussels, cooked in a sauce made from coconut milk, onion, garlic, and other spices. It is a very flavorful dish that reflects the abundance of fresh seafood in the region.

Fish Sancocho

Fish sancocho is a type of thick soup made with fish and a variety of vegetables such as yuca, plantain, and potatoes. It is cooked slowly to allow all the flavors to blend well. It is a very nutritious dish and is especially enjoyed during family gatherings.

Shrimp Empanadas

These empanadas are filled with shrimp and often mixed with ingredients such as onion, bell pepper, and spices. They are fried until golden and crispy, and are served as an appetizer or snack.

Grilled Goat

Grilled goat is a specialty in the region, where the goat (kid) is cooked on the grill or in the oven, marinated with local spices. It is served with side dishes such as rice, salad, and yuca.

Turkey Tamal

Unlike tamales found in other parts of Colombia, the turkey tamal from La Guajira is made with turkey meat and cooked wrapped in plantain leaves. It is a very flavorful dish, full of spices.
